The Corset – Underwear or Overwear?
Corsets are no longer something that are worn under layers and layers of clothing, but are seeing a renaissance as both a provocative and sexy item of lingerie as well as a stunning lead item for an evening outfit.
Corsets can be dated back to around the 1500’s and were constructed of metal as opposed to the silk and lace we associate with them today. They were worn by, both women and men as a form of armour, as an attack from a knife was a common threat. No change there then to some areas of society today!
Corsets really didn’t become big business until the Victorians embraced them, around the 1830’s and produced some gorgeous designs. They also developed improved fitting and functionality with designs such as ice cone, ball- conical, conical-conical, hourglass and oval chest.
The Edwardians picked up where the Victorians left off and developed the corset further with s-curve and straight front from about 1900.
Ultimately the corset evolved into the girdle and spawned the development of the modern bra but has seen it’s popularity grow again as lingerie fashion houses everywhere recognise that sometimes the original design’s are always the best.
